Thor, as the only original MCU Avenger who wasn’t from Earth, was forced there for each of his movies until now. Instead of the main plot involving normal human characters, Thor: Ragnarok has fun with Thor’s more fantastical elements. The only scenes which take place on Earth are brief and either involve Thor interacting with Doctor Strange, or with his own family. From there, the movie takes off (literally) and is an epic comedy. Don’t worry as this movie was just released this review is spoiler free!
The plot is about Thor having to fight Hella, who is determined to conquer the universe with Thor’s home of Asgard. After their first fight, Thor finds himself on another planet where he meets other characters, including the Hulk, who he either needs to defeat or recruit to help in his fight against Hella.
It’s not a secret that Hulk is in this movie, and we see him within the first third. Though the trailers look like they give away a lot of information about the plot, there are still a lot of elements which were not revealed which make a lot of the jokes especially funny. A lot of the new characters, especially Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, are also hilarious! Of course Loki is great as always when he’s in a supporting role. There are some unexpected cameos early on that the whole audience had a good laugh over.
Hella is well played by Cate Blanchett, but she’s probably the least humorous character in the movie as she spends most of her scenes explaining past events. That’s not much of a problem, however, as this isn’t what people will think back on.
Instead audiences are going to remember this as the most comedic MCU movie (except maybe for both Guardians of the Galaxy films) and for having the best use ever of the “Immigrant Song”. This is by far the best Thor movie and I’ve already pre-ordered it on iTunes. Try to see it in theaters, and stay until after the credits for one more laugh.
